July / August – Galway Hooker Races

Hookers, now embraced as leisure crafts, showcase the craftsmanship of boat builders and crews during Summer Regattas. Competitors navigate a marked sea course bordered by buoys, maneuvering around them multiple times to complete the race.

Preceding the Regatta, three signals initiate a countdown to the race’s start. In races with various boat classes, the second signal marks the start for slower boats, with the time gap between this signal and the final one serving as the handicap for the day. Skippers keep their boats in motion, assessing the racecourse and conditions while awaiting the final signal.

Galway, along with numerous spots in South Connemara like Rossaveel, Spiddal, Kilkieran, Lettermullan, Carraroe, Rosmuc, Cashel, Roundstone, and two Aran Islands (Inishmore and Inishmaan), serves as traditional venues for these Summer regattas.
