Cargo eBike Life: How It Transformed Our Family Adventures

Becoming a Cargo eBike Cyclist: A Family Adventure

Two years ago, my family’s way of commuting and exploring completely changed when we invested in an electric cargo ebike. At the time, my children were seven and three years old, and I was looking for a way to make our daily routines and family outings more enjoyable and efficient. After much consideration, we decided to go for the Trek Fetch+ 4, and later, the Trek Fetch+ 2—both of which have been life-changing.

The Trek Fetch+ 4: A Game-Changer for Young Families

The Fetch+ 4 was our first step into the world of electric cargo ebikes, and it was fantastic for transporting both kids with plenty of space for extra passengers and cargo. This front-loading cargo bike allowed me to carry both children, and at times, even their cousins or friends, making it perfect for school runs and weekend adventures.

Key Features of the Trek Fetch+ 4:

  • Front-loading box: Spacious enough for multiple children or cargo.
  • Powerful Bosch motor: Assisted pedalling made cycling smooth, even when fully loaded.
  • Stable design: Easy to manoeuvre, even with heavier loads.
  • Weather protection: The option of a rain cover ensured the kids stayed dry in unpredictable Irish weather.

It was a brilliant bike for when the kids were younger and needed to be securely seated. The Fetch+ 4 not only made commutes easier but also turned cycling into a fun, family-bonding experience. However, as my eldest, Abby, grew, and our needs changed, we decided to transition to the Trek Fetch+ 2.

The Trek Fetch+ 2: More Flexibility, More Freedom

The Fetch+ 2 was a real game-changer. Unlike the Fetch+ 4, this model is a longtail cargo ebike, which is more compact yet still has enough room to carry two children and extra gear. It instantly made life easier, as it was simpler to cycle both with and without the kids. The Fetch+ 2 allowed me to navigate the town more efficiently, handle school drop-offs effortlessly, and still use it as a practical daily commuter when riding solo.

Why the Trek Fetch+ 2 Stands Out:

More compact than the Fetch+ 4: Easier to store and manoeuvre.

Still plenty of room: The extended rear rack can carry two children comfortably or even accommodate Emma’s additional bike.

Versatile design: Works equally well for school runs, grocery shopping, and weekend rides.

Great for solo riding: Unlike bulkier cargo bikes, it feels natural to ride even when empty.

By this point, Abby had outgrown sitting on the back, so she transitioned to riding her own Trek Wahoo 26”Emma, however, still loves riding on the Fetch+ 2, and we even bring her Trek Precaliber with us. If she gets tired, we simply bring the bike onto the Fetch+ 2, giving her the flexibility to ride when she wants and rest when needed. This has made longer family rides so much more enjoyable and practical.

The Next Step: Tackling Hills with a Tow System

One of our biggest challenges has been tackling the steep hills on our morning school run. Now that Abby is riding independently, we’ve recently invested in a bike towing system, which we’re eager to test. The idea is that I’ll be able to give her a little boost up those big climbs, making the ride to school easier and more enjoyable for both of us. If it works as expected, (Still to be tested) it’ll be another game-changing addition to our cycling adventures!

Conclusion: Why Electric Cargo Bikes Are a Must for Families

Switching to an electric cargo bike has transformed our daily lives in so many ways. It has made commuting more efficient, family outings more fun, and has encouraged our children to develop a love for cycling from an early age. The flexibility to adapt as they grow—whether by changing bike models, bringing along their own bikes, or using a tow system—means that we can continue enjoying this lifestyle for years to come.

If you’re considering an electric cargo bike for your family, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether it’s the Fetch+ 4 for younger kids or the Fetch+ 2 for added flexibility, these bikes make life on two wheels an absolute joy!
