Keep your wheels turning, your body moving, and your spirits high this winter
with a little help from Clifden Bike Shop.
As the evenings draw in and there’s a bit more chill in the air, we’re all thinking about how to keep rolling through the winter — or how best to store our bikes until the spring sunshine returns. Here at Clifden Bike Shop, we love this time of year. The air is fresh, the scenery is stunning, and with a little preparation, it’s still a great season for cycling.
Give Your Bike Some Pre-Winter Care
Before winter really sets in, now’s the perfect time to get your bike checked over. A good service means you can ride safely and comfortably through the colder months — and avoid any surprises come spring.
1. Check Your Tyres and Pressure
Winter roads can be wet, slippery, and full of debris. Swap to tyres with a bit more tread or slightly wider ones for better grip. Keep your tyre pressure a little lower than usual — it’ll give you more traction and a smoother ride on slick surfaces.
2. Lubricate for the Season
Rain and grit can wear your chain down quickly. Use a wet lube designed for winter conditions — it lasts longer and keeps rust at bay. Wipe off any excess to prevent dirt buildup.
3. Inspect Your Brakes
Good braking is essential on cold, damp roads. Check your brake pads for wear and make sure they’re making full contact with the rim or disc. If they look glazed, cracked, or thin — it’s time for replacements.
4. Fit Mudguards
A small upgrade that makes a big difference! Mudguards keep water, mud, and grime off you and your bike — making your ride more comfortable and your bike easier to clean. check out all options in Clifden Bike Shop
5. Keep It Clean and Protected
Give your bike a thorough wash before winter sets in. Salt, grit, and moisture can corrode metal parts fast. Dry it well, apply a protective spray (especially to bolts and the drivetrain), and store it somewhere dry and sheltered when not in use.
Light Up and Stay Visible – How to Display Your Bike Lights for Maximum Safety
With shorter days and darker evenings, good bike lights are a must. We’ve got a great range of front and rear lights, reflective gear, and winter accessories in the shop. Pop in and we’ll help you choose the right setup so you can see — and be seen — on every ride.
1. Use a Steady Front Light and a Flashing Rear Light
A steady white front light helps you see the road ahead and signals to others that you’re coming. A flashing red rear light catches the attention of drivers and other cyclists from behind. This combination gives you the best visibility day and night.
2. Position Lights at Eye Level
Make sure your front light is angled slightly downward to light the road without dazzling oncoming traffic. Your rear light should be mounted on the seatpost or rear rack — visible, not blocked by clothing, bags, or mudguards.
3. Add Backup or Secondary Lights
Consider a second rear light on your helmet, bag, or rear stay — redundancy helps if one battery runs out. A small flashing front light on your handlebar or helmet makes you even more visible in low light.
4. Use Daytime Running Mode (If Available)
Many modern bike lights have a daytime flash mode — great for cloudy or low-light conditions even during the day.
5. Check and Charge Regularly
Get into the habit of charging your lights after every few rides.
Keep a small USB charger in your bag — or have a backup light ready, especially on longer rides.
6. Reflectors Still Matter
Don’t forget your pedal, wheel, and frame reflectors — they shine bright in car headlights and add extra visibility from all angles.
Storing Your Bike for the Winter?
If you’re taking a break from cycling for a bit, make sure your bike is cleaned, dried, and properly stored. A bit of TLC before you put it away will make a big difference later. If you’re unsure what products to use, or how best to store your bike, just ask us — we’re always happy to offer advice. We have a few options in store for wall storage and racks that will make life a lot easier.
Keep Pedalling — It’s Still Beautiful Out There
We’re lucky in Connemara to have a mild climate, so there’s no need to give up cycling completely! With the right gear, it’s still lovely to get out on the road or trail, enjoy that fresh air, and keep your body moving. And if the weather really isn’t playing ball, a bike trainer can turn your regular bike into an indoor workout machine — a great way to stay active over the winter months.
